“Classroom Conversations” Getting to Know My Student

"One challenge the school faces is the obligations of students' families, making it difficult for them to continue studying.” "Bee" — Napatsorn Suaysod, a Teach For Thailand (TFT) Fellow (cohort 10), shares her experiences upon starting to teach at the school. "Here, many students encounter challenges at home such as divorced parents, poverty, or substance abuse. Some fail to attend school, and others are forced to drop out." As a new teacher at the school, Bee prioritizes ensuring her students understand the importance of education. Consequently, she dedicates her time to making her classroom more effective and concise while also allocating time for "Classroom Conversations."

“Classroom Conversations” provides an opportunity for Bee to learn more about her students, their thought processes, and the reasons behind their actions. It bridges the gap between both parties and with time and consistency, Bee earns her students’ trust.

“Focusing on communication allows my students to contemplate their emotions. Initially hesitant to approach me, they gradually become more open and confide in me about the challenges they face at home or their aspirations for the future.”

Despite her friendly demeanor, Bee’s seriousness and commitment instill a sense of self-responsibility in her students — not just for her class but for all subjects. This sense of responsibility will accompany them as they mature and graduate.

One of Bee’s teaching goals is to ensure her students understand that education is crucial for achieving their desired futures.

“They will become contributing members of society after graduation.”

Bee’s trust and belief in her students are evident through her dedication to their teacher-student relationship and her concern for their well-being. She inspires hope for a better future for her students, prioritizing their dreams and growth without limitations.

As the “connector,” Bee reflects on her role for her students, their families, and their education. Their trust in her enables her to connect them with the necessary support systems. Bee consistently consults with other teachers to ensure safety and appropriateness throughout this process.

“This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the involvement of both teachers and students.”

“Spending time with my students has allowed me to understand their challenges and connect them with solutions. This underscores my responsibility as a consulting teacher,” Bee concludes her interview.

Bee is one of many Teach For Thailand Fellows who firmly believe in every child’s potential to thrive.
