เส้นทางแห่ง “นักพัฒนา”
หลังเรียนจบด้านสังคมสงเคราะห์ ดานาตั้งเป้าที่จะพัฒนาสังคมผ่านการลงมือทำ “โครงการผู้นำการเปลี่ยนแปลง” ของทีช ฟอร์ ไทยแลนด์ จึงเป็นคำตอบ
เพราะสิ่งที่พี่ดานาเก็บเกี่ยวได้จากประสบการณ์ครั้งนี้ คือ “วิธีเรียนในสิ่งที่เราไม่รู้” จากการที่ได้สอนวิชาคณิตศาสตร์แม้จะจบสายสังคมมา รวมถึง “ทักษะการสื่อสาร” จากการได้ทำงานทั้งกับนักเรียน ครู ผู้อำนวยการโรงเรียน ผ่านโครงการต่างๆ ซึ่งต้องสร้างความเข้าใจและสื่อสารกับทุกฝ่ายอย่างต่อเนื่อง
“เราจบสายสังคม ลำพังดึงประสบการณ์เดิมตัวเองมันไม่พอ ต้องทบทวนหาวิธีการให้ตัวเองเข้าใจแก่นของเนื้อหานั้นก่อน แล้วหาวิธีการถ่ายทอดให้นักเรียนเข้าใจ” ดานาเล่า
“นอกจากทำงานกับนักเรียนแล้ว ก็ต้องทำงานกับครูและผอ. ด้วย แปลว่าเราต้องเข้าใจเขา และต้องอธิบายให้เขาทุกคนเข้าใจและซื้อไอเดียเราด้วย”
นอกจากนี้ การเป็นครูยังเปิดโลกใบใหม่ และมุมมองใหม่ๆ กับเกี่ยวกับธรรมชาติของเด็กให้กับดานา โดยเฉพาะกลุ่มที่ไม่ได้เรียบร้อยแบบที่ผู้ใหญ่คาดหวัง
เธอค้นพบว่า เด็กกลุ่มนี้แค่ต้องการคนที่เข้าใจ เพราะแต่ละคนต่างมีเอกลักษณ์และความต้องการไม่เหมือนกัน ผู้ใหญ่ต้องรู้วิธีการรับมือและสร้างความไว้ใจ พวกเขาจึงจะกล้าเปิดเผยตัวตนของตัวเองออกมา
“การเป็นครูทำให้รู้ว่า จริงๆ แล้วเด็กกลุ่มนี้น่ารักมากถ้าเขาเชื่อใจเรา มันเปิดมุมมองว่า เด็กทุกคนมีศักยภาพ แต่อยู่ที่ผู้ใหญ่อย่างเราจะเข้าหาพวกเขาอย่างไร” ดานาเล่า “แล้ว ทีช ฟอร์ ไทยแลนด์ ทำให้เห็นว่าความแตกต่างเป็นสิ่งสวยงาม มนุษย์มีศักยภาพของตัวเอง และเราไม่จำเป็นต้องทำให้ทุกคนเหมือนกัน”
หลังจบโครงการฯ 2 ปี ดานายังคงใช้ทักษะและประสบการณ์จากโครงการฯ ทำงานเกี่ยวกับการศึกษาต่อในฐานะผู้ช่วยนักวิจัย หน่วยปฏิบัติการวิจัยเพื่อการพัฒนาด้านเด็กและเยาวชน (CYD) คณะครุศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย
เธอร่วมขับเคลื่อนการสร้างพื้นที่เรียนรู้ให้กับเด็กทั้งในและนอกระบบการศึกษาอยู่ 7 ปี ก่อนจะมาเป็น Project Coordinator & Evaluation ที่ Mappa แพลตฟอร์มเพื่อการศึกษาที่เน้นผลักดันการเรียนรู้ของเด็กไทย ผ่านการพัฒนาแวดล้อมของพวกเขา
การพัฒนาเริ่มที่ “ครอบครัว”
หนึ่งในแวดล้อมดังกล่าว คือ “ครอบครัว” เพราะนอกจากโรงเรียนและชุมชน “พ่อแม่” คือคนสำคัญที่จะเติมเต็ม “ตัวตน” ของเด็กให้เชื่อมั่น รักตัวเอง และเติบโตเป็นผู้ใหญ่ที่เขาอยากเป็น
“ตัวตนของพ่อแม่ส่งผลต่อตัวตนของเด็ก เพราะฉะนั้นถ้าอยากให้ลูกเป็นอย่างไร พ่อแม่ก็ต้องเป็นแบบนั้น” ดานากล่าว
เมื่อพ่อแม่มีความมั่นคงและเข้าใจตัวตนของตัวเอง ลูกจะรับรู้และวางใจว่าทุกๆ การกระทำของเขาจะมีพ่อแม่ให้กำลังใจอยู่เสมอ
"พ่อแม่จะเป็นพื้นที่ปลอดภัยของลูก ก็ต่อเมื่อใส่ใจและแสดงออกผ่านการกระทำ เพราะมันคือสิ่งที่ลูกรับรู้ได้"
พ่อแม่ต้องอย่าลืมดูแลตัวเอง
“ทุกคนเป็นพ่อแม่ครั้งแรก เป็นลูกครั้งแรก มันคือความสัมพันธ์ใหม่ๆ ที่เราต้องเรียนรู้และรับมือ” เธอเล่า “แต่ถ้าพ่อแม่ดูแลตัวเองได้ดี ก็จะส่งผลต่อตัวตนของลูก แล้วลูกก็จะพร้อมส่งต่อสิ่งนี้ให้คนอื่น”
เพราะท้ายที่สุดแล้ว ดานาเชื่อว่าสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ดีจะส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้และการเติบโตของเด็กให้มีคุณภาพได้

Home is Where It All Begins
"If a flower doesn’t bloom, we don’t fix the flower—we fix the environment."
This quote from Mappa reflects the guiding philosophy for Dana - Dana Mohamadrugsapol throughout her work.
The Path towards Social Transformation
After earning a degree in social work, Dana set her sights on making a difference in society through action. The Fellowship Program at Teach for Thailand became the perfect starting point.
What she gained from the experience was, in her words, “learning how to learn what we don’t know”, as she taught Mathematics despite her background. She also developed communication skills through navigating relationships, building understanding and aligning goals across all stakeholders.
“My degree in social work and experiences weren’t enough. I had to step back, understand the core of the subject and then find a way to convey it to my students”, she reflects.
“I also had to work with teachers and the principal. That meant I had to align our understandings in order for them to buy into my ideas”.
Teaching also opened Dana’s eyes to a different perspective on children - especially those who may not behave as ‘appropriately’ as adults expect.
She discovered that they simply needed someone who understood them. Each child is unique, and it's the responsibility of adults to know how to approach them and build trust—only then will the child feel safe being themselves.
“Being a teacher helped me see that these kids are actually very sweet, if they trust us. It opened up my perspective: every child has potential. It depends on how we, as adults, choose to reach them”, she told us.
“Teach for Thailand taught me that differences are beautiful. Everyone has their own strengths, and we don’t need to make everyone the same.”
From the Classroom to Community Development
After completing the 2-year program, Dana continued applying the skills and experiences she gained in the education field. She worked as a Research Assistant at the Child and Youth Development Research Unit (CYD), Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University.
She spent 7 years driving initiatives that created learning spaces for children both within and outside the formal education system. Today, she works as a Project Coordinator & Evaluation at Mappa - an education platform that promotes children’s learning through the improvement of their environments.
Growth Starts with the Family
One of those key environments is the family. Beyond schools and communities, parents play a critical role in shaping a child’s identity, self-love and confidence, ultimately helping them grow into the adults they aspire to be.
“A parent’s identity influences the identity of their child. So if you want your child to become a certain way, you need to embody that”.
When parents are emotionally secure and self-aware, children can sense that and trust that their actions are supported. This makes the home a safe and nurturing space.
“Parents become a safe space when they care and show it through action, because those are the things children can feel”.
Parent’s Well-Being is Also Crucial
“Everyone is a parent for the first time. Everyone is a child for the first time. It’s a new relationship that we all have to learn and grow through”, Dana explains, “but when parents take good care of themselves, it positively affects their children—and the children will be ready to pass that on to others”.
In the end, Dana believes that a nurturing environment is key to a quality environment of every child.
