ตอนที่ หยก - ประกายพร ไม้ทอง เรียนอยู่ ม.1 ที่โรงเรียนในชุมชนคลองเตย เธอฝันว่าอยากไปปารีสสักวัน แต่ไม่รู้เลยว่าจะไปถึงตรงนั้นได้อย่างไร ที่บ้านทำงานเป็นกรรมกร ไม่มีใครในครอบครัวเรียนสายสามัญมาก่อน และไม่มีใครที่จะแนะนำเธอได้ว่าเส้นทางข้างหน้าควรเดินไปทางไหน
จนกระทั่งครูผู้นำการเปลี่ยนแปลงจากทีช ฟอร์ ไทยแลนด์คนหนึ่งก้าวเข้ามาในห้องเรียนของเธอ
ปอ - ปาริฉัตร คำแหง ครูผู้นำฯ รุ่น 2 ได้เข้าไปสอนวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์ที่โรงเรียนชุมชนหมู่บ้านพัฒนา โรงเรียนขนาดเล็กใจกลางชุมชนคลองเตยที่ไม่ผ่านการประเมินของสำนักงานรับรองมาตรฐานและประเมินคุณภาพการศึกษา (สมศ.) มาเป็นเวลากว่า 15 ปี ส่วนหนึ่งเพราะคะแนนโอเน็ตของนักเรียนไม่ผ่านเกณฑ์ ความกดดันนั้นส่งต่อจากบนลงล่าง จากสำนักงานเขต สู่ผู้อำนวยการ สู่ครู และสู่เด็กๆ ในห้องเรียน
ปอเห็นทั้งหมดนั้น แต่เธอก็เห็นอีกสิ่งหนึ่งที่คนอื่นอาจมองข้าม "เด็กคนนี้มีของ ต้องส่งเสริมเขาเยอะๆ หน่อย" ปอเล่าถึงวันแรกที่เจอหยก และเมื่อได้รู้จักหยกมากขึ้นก็พบว่าเด็กผู้หญิงคนนี้ร่าเริง ชอบทำอาหาร ชอบวาดรูป และมีความมั่นใจในแบบของตัวเอง "รู้เลยว่าเด็กคนนี้เราอยากส่งเสริม ไม่ใช่ด้านวิชาการจ๋าๆ แต่อยากให้เขาออกไปเห็นโลกกว้าง ไปสัมผัสอะไรใหม่ๆ"
ส่วนหยกก็จำได้ว่าปอไม่ใช่ครูที่ดุหรือเสียงดัง แต่เป็นครูที่ช่างสังเกต "ครูปอเคยแชร์ว่าเขาก็มีช่วงเวลาที่รู้สึกว่ายากและเหนื่อย หยกเลยคิดว่าครูปอน่าจะเข้าใจสถานการณ์ชีวิตของเรา" และนั่นคือเหตุผลที่หยกเลือกเดินเข้าไปหาปอทุกครั้งที่มีคำถามที่ใหญ่เกินกว่าจะถามใครในบ้านได้
บทสนทนาที่เปลี่ยนทุกอย่าง
เมื่อถึงเวลาเลือกเส้นทาง ม.ปลาย ที่บ้านอยากให้หยกเรียนสายอาชีพ เพราะทุกคนในครอบครัวจบสายนั้นมา และเห็นว่ามีงานรองรับแน่นอน แต่หยกรู้ว่าตัวเองอยากเรียนภาษาฝรั่งเศส และสายอาชีพไม่มีสิ่งที่เธออยากเรียน
หยกจึงไปปรึกษาปอ
ปอเข้าใจความรู้สึกนั้นดี เพราะเธอเองก็เคยเป็นเด็กคนหนึ่งที่ไม่มีใครแนะนำทางให้ "ตอน ม.ปลาย เราหาข้อมูลเองหมด ไม่มีใครบอกว่าต้องไปตรงนั้นตรงนี้ พอมาเจอหยก เราเลยอยากเป็นคนนั้นให้เขา"
หยกเล่าว่า "ครูปอเขาไม่ได้บอกว่าอันไหนถูกอันไหนผิด เขาให้ข้อมูล แล้วให้หนูไปตัดสินใจเอง" และจากบทสนทนานั้น หยกตัดสินใจเรียนสายสามัญ เลือกสายภาษา และเดินหน้าสู่เป้าหมายที่เธอตั้งไว้
แต่เส้นทางไม่ได้ราบรื่น มีรอบสอบที่พลาด มีรอบโควตาที่ไม่ทันยื่น มีพ่อที่ไม่อยากให้ไปเรียนไกลบ้าน แต่ทุกครั้งที่หยกทักไปหาปอ คำตอบที่ได้กลับมาคือข้อมูลที่ละเอียด ชัดเจน และกำลังใจที่ทำให้เธอลุกขึ้นต่อ
"ครูปอบอกเสมอว่า อย่าไปกลัว มันน่าเสียดายมากกว่าถ้าเราไม่ได้ลองทำแล้วปล่อยโอกาสทิ้งไป"
สุดท้ายหยกติดคณะศิลปศาสตร์ สาขาภาษาฝรั่งเศส มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์
จากเด็กในคลองเตยสู่ประเทศฝรั่งเศส
ระหว่างเรียน หยกทำงานพาร์ทไทม์เพื่อแบกรับค่าใช้จ่าย เกรดไม่ได้สูงอย่างที่หวัง แต่เธอไม่เคยหยุดมองไปข้างหน้า เมื่อคณะมีทุนแลกเปลี่ยนไปฝรั่งเศสภายใต้โครงการเสริมสร้างศักยภาพนิสิตสู่สากล หยกสมัครทันที และชนะทุนนั้นมาได้
ฝรั่งเศสคือประเทศแรกในชีวิตที่เธอได้ออกไปเห็น "มันเป็นความสำเร็จในชีวิตอย่างหนึ่ง เพราะตอนเด็กๆ มีความฝันว่าอยากจะไปประเทศนี้ให้ได้ พยายามมาตลอดจนสุดท้ายเราก็ได้ไปแล้ว"
และเมื่อถามว่าปอมีส่วนในเส้นทางนี้อย่างไร หยกใช้เวลาคิดแล้วตอบว่า
"สุภาษิตไทยบอกว่าครูเปรียบเหมือนเรือที่มีหน้าที่พานักเรียนขึ้นฝั่ง แต่ครูปอเป็นมากกว่าเรือ หนูรู้สึกว่าครูปอเป็นเครื่องบิน เครื่องบินที่พาหนูข้ามไปฝรั่งเศสได้"
วันนี้ของหยก
ปัจจุบัน หยกกำลังจะจบการศึกษาจากมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ และเพิ่งได้รับการตอบรับเข้าทำงานในฐานะล่ามภาษาฝรั่งเศส-ไทย ที่สำนักงานทนายความระหว่างประเทศ Haussmann Loran Parichat & Partners งานแรกในชีวิตที่ได้ใช้ภาษาที่รักและเลือกเรียนมาตั้งแต่ต้น
"ถ้าไม่มีครูปอให้คำปรึกษาวันนั้น หนูคงไม่ได้มาอยู่จุดนี้"
การลงทุนในครูผู้นำฯ หนึ่งคน ไม่ได้สิ้นสุดที่วันที่เขาจบโครงการฯ แต่มันเริ่มต้นจากตรงนั้น

From Khlong Toei to France, Because One Teacher Believed in Her
When Yok – Prakaiporn Maithong was in Grade 7 at a school in Bangkok's Khlong Toei community, she dreamed of going to Paris one day. But she had no idea how she would get there. Her family worked as laborers. No one in her family had followed an academic education pathway before, and she had no one to guide her on what direction her future could take.
Until a Teach for Thailand’s Fellow stepped into her classroom.
Por – Parichat Kumhang, a Fellow from Cohort 2, began teaching science at Chumchon Muban Phatthana School, a small school in the heart of the Khlong Toei community. For more than 15 years, the school had failed to meet the standards set by Thailand's Office for National Education Standards and Quality Assessment (ONESQA), partly because students' O-NET scores had fallen below the required benchmarks. The pressure travelled from the top down, from the district office to the school director, from teachers to students sitting in the classroom.
Por saw all of that. But she also saw something that others might have overlooked. "This child has something special. She just needs more opportunities and support." Por remembers the very first day she met Yok. As she got to know her more and more, she discovered a cheerful young girl who loved cooking and drawing and carried a quiet confidence of her own. "I knew I wanted to support her, not just academically. I wanted her to see the world and experience things beyond what she already knew."
Yok remembers that Por was not the kind of teacher who was strict or raised her voice. She was observant. "Teacher Por had shared that she had gone through difficult and exhausting times too. That made me feel that she might understand what was happening in my life." And that was why, whenever Yok had a question too big to ask anyone at home, she went to Por.
The Conversation That Changed Everything
When it was time to choose her path for upper secondary school, Yok's family wanted her to pursue vocational education. Everyone in her family had taken that path, and it seemed like the safest choice. But Yok knew she wanted to study French and vocational education did not offer the path she was looking for.
So she went to Por.
Por understood exactly how that felt. She, too, had once been a student with no one to guide her. "When I was in high school, I had to find all the information myself. No one told me where I should go or what I should do. When I met Yok, I wanted to be that person for her."
Yok recalls: "Teacher Por never told me which choice was right or wrong. She gave me the information and let me make the decision for myself." After that conversation, Yok chose the academic track, specializing in languages, and continued pursuing the future she had imagined for herself.
But the journey was far from easy. There were entrance exams she didn't pass. Application deadlines she missed. Her father didn't want her to study far from home. But every time Yok reached out to Por, she received detailed information, clear guidance, and encouragement that helped her keep going.
"Teacher Por always told me, 'Don't be afraid. It would be far more regrettable not to try and let an opportunity pass you by.'"
Eventually, Yok was accepted into the Faculty of Liberal Arts, French Program, at Kasetsart University.
From Khlong Toei to France
While studying, Yok worked part-time to help cover her expenses. Her grades were not as high as she had hoped, but she never stopped looking ahead. When her faculty offered an exchange scholarship to France through an international student development program, Yok applied immediately and won the scholarship.
France became the first country she had ever travelled to. "It was one of the biggest achievements of my life. When I was young, I dreamed of going to this country. I kept trying, and eventually, I made it."
When asked how much Por had shaped her journey, Yok paused before answering.
"There's a Thai saying that teachers are like boats that carry their students safely to shore. But Teacher Por was more than a boat to me. I think she was an airplane — an airplane that took me all the way to France."
Where Yok Is Today
Today, Yok is about to graduate from Kasetsart University. She has also recently accepted her first job as a French–Thai interpreter at an international law firm, Haussmann Loran Parichat & Partners, a role that allows her to use the language she fell in love with and chose to pursue years ago.
"If Teacher Por hadn't given me advice that day, I don't think I would be where I am today."
