Fellows and Alumni Team Up with 100+ Deutsche Bank Volunteers to Teach Rural Students Financial Skills

At Ban Pong Ta Long School in Nakhon Ratchasima, two Fellows from Cohort 12: Sofia Kadenghayi (Sofia) and Paporn Utaivattanapakdee (Ferry) joined forces with two Alumni, Prapun Leekul (Pan) from Cohort 6 and Phikhanet Chantra (Tae) from Cohort 8, to design and lead a Financial Literacy workshop. Over 100 Deutsche Bank employees from the regional and Thailand teams joined them for the day.

Students at the school had heard the word "financial saving" many times before but for most of them, it was something adults told them to do, not something they truly understood.

Rather than teaching formulas or memorization, the session asked students to think through everyday decisions: What is the difference between a need and a want? What should money in a savings jar be used for? If you had 100 baht today, how would you spend it?

These may seem like simple questions, but for many students, they opened a different kind of conversation than a typical classroom. By the end of the session, nearly 80% of students could tell the difference between what they needed and what they simply wanted.

"One of the most memorable moments happened during the 'Needs vs. Wants' activity. A student raised their hand and asked, 'Can I choose not to buy either one? I don't think I need them.' Even though the student had enough money to buy both, they chose not to. It showed that the students were genuinely applying what they'd learned to their own decisions," said Ferry, Cohort 12.

What made the day meaningful wasn't only the content, it was who stood in front of the classroom. Current Fellows chose to give their time to create this experience. Alumni, now working in the private sector, chose to come back to the classroom because they still believe education can change lives, and that every child deserves the chance to learn skills that matter beyond school.

"Children in rural areas are curious, quick to learn, and more open to new experiences than many people assume. All they need is a teaching process that's engaging and accessible to them," said Sofia, Cohort 12.

Both Alumni said the experience brought back memories of their own two years in the Fellowship. Passing on knowledge, inspiration, and encouragement to children is something that only comes from hands-on experience and it didn't just reignite their own hope for change in Thai education. It rippled outward, to the children, the Fellows they worked alongside, and the partners who came together for the same goal.

The collaboration didn't stop at the classroom door. Teach for Thailand and the Deutsche Bank team also painted and renovated parts of the school, creating a more welcoming space for students to keep learning in.

The Deutsche Bank team said the day was meaningful for them too.

"Being able to work side-by-side with your fellows, alumni, and staff from painting the school to supporting the financial literacy sessions made the experience especially memorable and enriching for our team," said Esther Liu, Deutsche Bank.

At Teach for Thailand, we believe meaningful change in education doesn't come from teachers alone, it happens when schools, communities, and organizations share one belief: that every child deserves opportunity, skills, and people who believe in their potential.

Thank you to the Deutsche Bank team for building this experience with us, and to every Fellow and Alumnus who continues to stand alongside students in whatever way they can.

If your organization wants to help create opportunities like this, we'd love to explore what we can build together.
